Friday September 29, 1989

BRISBANE: Five men killed in a light plane crash in western Queensland had been returning home from cattle sales in Longreach when the aircraft went down near Roma, police said last night.

All of the men are believed to be from properties in and around the Roma district, about 400 kilometres west of Brisbane.

Their names have not been released.

Air safety investigators are still at the scene of the crash on a property known as Kindal, about 20 kilometres north-west of Roma.

An army helicopter spotted the wreckage of the twin-engine Beechcraft Baron aircraft yesterday after a five-hour search.

There were no survivors.

Queensland police inspector John Bosel said the last contact with the plane was when it was four minutes from the town but no distress call was received.

A State Emergency Service helicopter from Brisbane and an Army helicopter were called in to assist police and local volunteers in the search.
